Future technology prospects for the two major industries of folding cartons and corrugated boxes!

01. Folding box

Smithers predicts that the folding carton market will grow by 14.38% between 2022 and 2027. This growth trend can be attributed to growing consumer concerns about sustainability, so more and more packaging is starting to use paper substrates. Although the production of folding cartons has historically been dominated by offset printing, it can now also be produced by flexo printing, digital printing and gravure printing. As far as digital printing is concerned, EP and inkjet printing are gaining more and more applications, especially inkjet technology has a faster growth rate due to its high speed and low cost.

Traditional press suppliers include Heidelberg, Komori and Kobal, all three of which have already launched digital presses. For example, the Heidelberg 106 takes 3-4 minutes to change orders. Suppliers offering inkjet solutions include Agfa/Inca, Landa, Koenig Bauer, Konica Minolta, Kodak and Fujifilm. Landa's S10 inkjet press is being printed in folding cartons by a growing number of printers. Except for Landa and Deshi, almost all other inkjet presses are in B2 format.

The drupa show is likely to be a "get-together" for many new sheet-fed inkjet equipment. Suppliers offering EP solutions include Canon, HP Indigo, MGI AlphaJet (now shipping) and Ricoh's Z75. Ricoh's Z75 has been successfully tested and is expected to launch in beta by the end of the year.

In addition, the HP T700 corrugated press is seen as a medium-sized press for corrugated pre-printing, but is also very suitable for folding carton printing and has just the right size. This technology was launched this year, so there is still a lot of room for progress, and it is a promising technology.

02.Corrugated box

If we talk about the largest packaging market, it should undoubtedly be corrugated packaging. Especially when it comes to e-commerce, corrugated packaging is growing at an astonishing rate and is expected to grow by nearly 14% between now and 2027. Currently, the printing of corrugated packaging mainly uses analog production processes, including flexographic printing, offset printing and partial gravure printing, while direct printing also has certain applications.

Among the suppliers of digital printing equipment, Xicon, Domino, HP, EFI and Konica Minolta are involved in this market. Since corrugated packaging is a very large market, there is a huge demand in the market, whether it is for carton transportation or shelf display. Therefore, we will see more applications of similar technologies, and there are also growth opportunities in the digital preprint market, with major players including HP, Bobst and Konica Minolta.

Another important question is how to connect all the devices together, especially as labor problems become more and more serious, processors need to start connecting these devices so that they can communicate with each other and thus throughout the process. So when a person buys a product from a retail shelf, the relevant information will be sent through the information chain to signal and create an order for a new order.
