Can the Aquinox nozzle revolutionize the water-based inkjet market?
Xaar recently introduced an innovative product: the Aquinox printhead, which can spray water-based inks and functional liquids, and can use liquids with high viscosity and pigment content. The development of this technology is expected to be more conducive to the development of water-based inks with more vibrant colors, excellent adhesion and simplified printing processes.
According to Searle, Aquinox technology combines a variety of technologies to optimize service life and robustness when handling aqueous fluids. These include a redesigned internal structure, new water-compatible materials capable of handling pH levels over a wider operating range, and a new drive system capable of optimal droplet ejection. The Aquinox nozzle is compatible with a variety of aqueous fluid types, can achieve operating speeds in excess of 100 m/min, and ejects fluids with viscosities up to 100 cP at injection temperatures, which means larger particles and more pigments for higher opacity.
Powered by Xaar's proven Hydra ink supply system, Aquinox features "plug-and-play" functionality and an intuitive user interface that can be easily integrated into new digital presses or modules. Additionally, Xaar offers a development kit that provides OEMs with everything they need to get up and running, including ink supply systems and nozzle drive electronics.
Karl Forbes, director of research and development at Xaar Group, said: "The key to the industrial reliability of Aquinox sprinklers is our TF technology recycling, which allows us to significantly improve injection reliability and uptime. We're talking about opening times that can be days rather than minutes, which means a lot less maintenance."
The wider process window of the Aquinox printhead also allows the use of existing water-based flexo ink feedstock chemicals, including metal options. This new degree of design freedom should also make progress in changing the current processes required for water-based printing. Opportunities such as reducing the need for special primers and lowering the energy level of dryers are possible.
