By joining the Blister Pack Collective, global health companies Bayer and Harlan are taking a big step towards reducing plastic waste in pharmaceutical and consumer health packaging. The initiative, led by PA Consulting and PulPac, aims to minimise the use of non-recyclable plastics in over-the-counter and prescription drug packaging, driving the development of more environmentally friendly pulp-molded blister packaging.




The technology is said to replace plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), with the potential to eliminate more than 100,000 tonnes of plastic used in pharmaceutical packaging each year. Keith Thornley, commercial director of DMF Collectives at PA Consulting, said: "The main goal of Blister Pack Collective is to use sustainable and renewable pulp materials to safely reduce and replace single-use plastics that are difficult to recycle in tablet blister packaging. PA Consulting, PulPac and all of our Blister Pack Collective members will work together to develop the necessary packaging and industrial-scale manufacturing processes to accelerate the transition to more sustainable blister packaging."




Harlan has been named as one of the founding members of the Blister Pack Collective. The alliance was formed to foster cross-industry collaboration between pharmaceutical, consumer health and FMCG businesses to accelerate the transition to more responsible tablet blister packaging. Bayer's consumer health division has committed to investing 100 million euros to convert 100% of its packaging to recyclable or renewable by 2030. Joining the Blister Pack Collective is in line with Bayer's goal of making a real impact on sustainability and reducing the environmental footprint of its products.

The group expects to develop the basic blister packaging and manufacturing process by mid-2024, with subsequent work focusing on expanding and enhancing the production process to ensure broad market access. Initial estimates shared by Blister Pack Collective suggest that pulp molding packaging will significantly reduce the use of plastics, with some applications achieving 100% paper packaging. "Pulp molding converts renewable, recyclable plant fibres into packaging. As the name suggests, the main advantage of pulp molding over wet molding is that it is a dry process. So, in essence, zero water is used in the production process and no additional energy is required to drive water." Thornley details, "This brings two main benefits - sustainability is better as water usage and associated energy are reduced, and these reduce unit production time and costs, making scaling possible."
